5 Valentine’s Day Date Ideas for People on a Budget!

Doreen Heake

Dallas Morning News recently published an article that stated more than 40% of households in Dallas are struggling to make ends meet, according to United Way. This means the struggle out here is REAL and that can make holidays like Valentine's Day extremely hard to celebrate especially when there's external pressure from social media to showcase your gifts and it can become a competition.

Whether you don't have the funds for a romantic getaway or you prefer to keep the celebration a bit more budget friendly this year, check out a list of a few ideas that may help you stretch your dollar this Valentine’s Day season!

1. Picnic in the Park

Klyde Warren Park, Addison Circle, Arbor Hills Nature Preserve and White Rock Lake are just a few of many places to set up a romantic picnic in the park. Bring a blanket, pack some fruit, sandwiches or grab some take out and candles and enjoy a night unplugged with great conversation. If you are not the best cook, Klyde Warren has an on-site restaurants for food and wine as well. The weather forecast predicts the high in Dallas should be 61 and the low 48, so be sure to bring a light jacket.

2. Scavenger Hunt

Plan a scavenger hunt around the city of all of your favorite memories. Go back to special restaurants or movie theaters and ask them to hold a clue with an envelope at the host stand or box office. The clues can lead to a home-cooked dinner with flowers or a few presents at a the most significant location. Bonus Tip: Make the evening extra special by buying strawberries and chocolate dip from the grocery store and making hand-dipped chocolate covered strawberries or get small candies to leave along the way

3. FreePlay in Richardson

FreePlay in Richardson is a great options for gamers or those looking to do something a bit different. This isn't your typical arcade.. both D Magazine and Dallas Observer has given them awards for Best Beer Selections and Games. For only a $10 cover fee, you get access to over 95 retro arcade games and pinball machines. They also serve food and drinks so all you'll need to bring are flowers for your special someone and be ready to have a great time. Check out there website here

4. Movie Night at Galaxy Drive In

If you don't mind a bit of a drive (depending where you are in the DFW) and want to have a bit of a retro feel to V-Day, cruise over to Galaxy Drive In Movie Theatre in Ennis! It's only $7 for adults to catch two features (what a steal!) and they have some of the latest movies showing each week. You can purchase tickets online here.

5. CupCake + Beer/Wine Pairing

Go to the bakery section of your local grocery store and make a variety pack of 3-4 cupcakes that can be split in half. Then, go to the beer and wine section and find a few local or craft beers that you think would accompany the flavors of cupcakes you have chosen. If your S.O. isn't a big beer fan, you can do the same concept with wine. Head to Pinterest for ideas of what flavors compliment which blends.

As you can see, there are plenty of ways to celebrate while watching your funds. With just over a week left to plan, we hope these ideas help you plan a special evening and create new memories for you guys. If you check out FreePlay or Galaxy Drive In or plan an epic picnic, pairing or scavenger hunt, we would love to hear about your experience.
