Free and Fun Things to Do in Chicago with Young Kids

Planning a family trip to Chicago with young kids doesn’t have to mean breaking the bank. Chicago is one of the most family-friendly cities in the U.S. because it blends urban adventure with kid-focused attractions. You’ll find world-class museums, outdoor activities, and immersive experiences that are exciting for both kids and parents, and (best of all) free!

Here’s a guide to free and fun things to do in Chicago with kids —with a few budget-friendly tips to make your trip smoother.

Lincoln Park Zoo – A Free Urban Oasis

When it comes to free things to do in Chicago with kids, Lincoln Park Zoo tops the list. This family favorite has been around since 1868 and remains one of the only free zoos in the country. Your little ones will love spotting lions, giraffes, zebras, and polar bears—all while admiring breathtaking views of  downtown. Don’t miss the Farm-in-the-Zoo, which gives kids a chance to get up close to cows, goats, and chickens. It’s a great way to connect city kids with farm life.

You will appreciate the playgrounds and shaded picnic areas, which make it easy to take a break when kids need to recharge. Best of all, the zoo is stroller- and wagon-friendly, making it a smooth experience for families with younger children.

Lincoln Park Conservatory – A Beautiful Indoor Escape

Right next to Lincoln Park Zoo, the Lincoln Park Conservatory offers over 1,200 acres of lush and quiet escapes perfect for families looking to slow down after a busy morning. Inside, you’ll find stunning displays of exotic plants, orchids, and ferns—an indoor jungle that kids love to explore. This spot is especially great for parents with strollers or wagons since it’s all indoors and temperature-controlled—ideal if you need a break from hot summers or chilly Chicago winds.

Admission is free but timed entry tickets are required for entry. Be sure to reserve online ahead of time. They are also closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan your visit for mid- to late-week or the weekend.

Note: Pets and emotional support animals are not permitted inside (service animals are welcome).

Navy Pier – Entertainment for the Whole Family

ree

No family trip to Chicago is complete without a stop at Navy Pier. While some attractions cost money (like the iconic Centennial Wheel), there’s still plenty of fun to be had without running down your wallet. Attractions like the merry-go-round and tea cup rides are reasonably priced at about $6–$8 per ride, making them a fun splurge without breaking the bank. You will also find interactive fountains and outdoor play areas perfect for letting kids run around and cool off in the summer. Visit the Navy Pier Events Calendar to see upcoming free events, live music, and kid-friendly performances.

Pro tip: Before you leave, be sure to take a family photo with stunning views of Lake Michigan as your backdrop!

Chicago Children’s Museum – Hands-On Learning

ree

Located right on Navy Pier, the Chicago Children’s Museum is a must-do if you have kids under 7. This interactive museum is filled with hands-on exhibits where kids can climb, build, explore, and create. My daughter loved the dinosaur exhibition where kids can uncover “fossils”, the MOEN Present "Water City" Exhibit where she got to enjoy an immersive stem activity powered by water (jackets are provided but it doesn’t hurt to pack a change of clothes), and the “Chicago Fire Station” where she got to dress up, put out fires, and practice fire safety!

While admission isn’t free, it’s worth every penny for families since tickets are valid for the entire day. You can leave, grab lunch on the pier, and come back to continue exploring.

Pro Tip: Look for free admission days (usually Thursday evenings) if you want to save money and still experience this gem.

Ohio Street Beach – A Relaxing Break

ree

If your family is visiting during warmer months, plan a stop at Ohio Street Beach. Located near Navy Pier, this sandy beach is calm, safe, and perfect for little swimmers. The shallow shoreline and lifeguard on duty makes it especially kid-friendly so you can relax with skyline views while the kids build sandcastles, splash in the water, or simply burn off some energy in the sun. FYI: Dining options are limited at Ohio Street Beach. The only on-site restaurant is Caffè Oliva, which serves casual food and drinks. If you’re planning to stay for a while, it’s smart to pack food and snacks in a cooler or wagon to keep everyone fueled and happy.

Additional "Pro Tips" for Exploring Chicago

Chicago is a big city, and while attractions are fairly close together, parents of young kids know that little legs tire quickly. To make your family trip as smooth as possible, keep these tips in mind:

  • Pack walkable shoes: You’ll do a lot of walking, whether exploring Navy Pier, strolling through Lincoln Park Zoo, or enjoying the lakefront. Comfortable shoes are a must for both parents and kids.

  • Bring or rent a wagon: If you’d rather skip public transportation (CTA buses and trains) or avoid paying for multiple Uber/Lyft rides, a wagon is a lifesaver. Kids can hop in when tired, and you’ll also have extra room for snacks, drinks, and bags.

  • Plan your day in sections: Focus on one area of the city at a time to minimize long walks and meltdowns. For example, pair Lincoln Park Zoo and the Conservatory together, or spend a whole day around Navy Pier, the Children’s Museum, and Ohio Street Beach.

  • Pack plenty of snacks and water: While Chicago has plenty of food options, very few options are “cheap” and little ones don’t always wait patiently. Having easy snacks on hand keeps everyone happy.

Whether you’re visiting with toddlers or elementary-aged children, Chicago offers plenty of attractions that will keep little ones engaged while giving parents peace of mind. From sandy beaches to zoos and gardens, your Chicago family adventure is sure to be both smooth and unforgettable.
