Washington, D.C., is a fantastic destination for families, offering a wide range of kid-friendly activities that are fun, educational, often free, and most importantly, toddler-approved. From museums to monuments to big green lawns where the kids can just run wild, there’s no shortage of ways to keep them busy (and burn off some of that endless energy). If you’re looking for free things to do with kids or unique experiences, check out these must-visit spots to add to your itinerary.
Smithsonian National Zoo: A Top Free Kids Activity in D.C.

The Smithsonian National Zoo is a perfect example of a free kids activity that will keep your kids occupied for hours. Home to over 2,700 animals including crowd favorites like the giant pandas on the “Asia Trail”, Sumatran tigers, and elephants, The Smithsonian National Zoo is filled with countless interactive exhibits and shows that combine learning with fun and adventure making it one of the most popular free things to do with kids in Washington, D.C. The "Kid’s Farm" exhibit is particularly great for younger children, providing an opportunity to interact with farm animals. With no admission fee and the ability to bring your own food and drinks, it’s an affordable and exciting way to spend the day with your family.
Tips for Visiting: While the zoo is free, parking costs $30 per car for the day. Lots fill up quickly, but you can reserve a pass in advance online. To save money, consider taking public transportation. Bring your own food and drinks (non-alcoholic and not in glass containers) to enjoy at one of the many picnic areas throughout the zoo. Keep an eye on the animal demos so you don’t miss any of the excitement!
National Children’s Museum: STEM Fun for the Whole Family
With its blend of imaginative play and STEM-focused exhibits, the National Children’s Museum is ideal for families seeking educational things to do in D.C. with kids. The museum features a variety of exhibits designed to spark creativity and curiosity. Our daughter has a blast at the Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Exhibit, where she was able to explore the beloved TV show’s world, role-play as various characters, and learn about her emotions, community helpers and so much more.
For older kids, the museum offers engaging STEM activities, including the "Wonder Lab," which introduces science and technology concepts in an immersive way. The "Mars Studio" is another highlight, giving kids a glimpse of what life might be like on the Red Planet. Another notable attraction is the "Dream Machine", a climbing structure that provides a chance for physical activity and adventure. For families looking for hands-on, interactive experiences, the National Children’s Museum is a must-see.
Tips for Visiting: Parking is available in the Ronald Reagan Building’s garage for $26 (4–15 hours). While you can’t bring food into the museum itself, visitors can bring their own food, but it must be eaten in the designated café area in the Ronald Reagan Building. The Ronald Reagan Building also has a food court with a variety of kid-friendly options, perfect for a quick meal or snack break.
Capitol Hill and the Washington Monument Lawn: Free Outdoor Fun

For a mix of history, iconic landmarks, and outdoor fun, head to Capitol Hill and the Washington Monument Lawn. These open spaces offered our family some of the best moments in Washington, D.C. We were able to relax, enjoy the weather whilst our daughter ran free (within a reasonable range) and burned energy.
Capitol Hill: Take a walk around the U.S. Capitol Building, where kids can marvel at its impressive architecture and admire the ducks on the lake. If your kiddos are eager to learn about the nation’s government, free tours of the Capitol are available, but reservations are recommended. It is also worth noting that the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court are also nearby (about a 5-minute walk).
Washington Monument Lawn: The sprawling National Mall, home to the Washington Monument, is perfect for picnics, games, and relaxation. Bring a blanket, frisbee, or soccer ball for some outdoor family fun. The National Mall is also surrounded by free museums, such as the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of Natural History, making it easy to combine outdoor play with educational exploration.
